CURATOR'S CHOICE AWARD
John Richer
"It is an honour to have my painting selected for this year’s Curator’s Choice Award. This past year, I wanted to examine the various connections we have with the objects in our lives and how they interact and define our individuality.
“Haven” is a painting of my father, exploring the association and union we have with our belongings and how they reflect our identity. I thank you for the opportunity to show my work along with all the amazing and talented artists in this years VAM43 show."
A LETTER FROM VAM'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Virtual VAM 43
This is a big shift in our annual juried exhibition of fine arts which is normally held at the Art Gallery of Mississauga but many things remained the same.
First, we had a wonderfully, eclectic panel of jurors this year who navigated the challenges of choosing works from the 158 applications. Thanks to elle alconcel, Matthew Varey and Gordon Shadrach. Each panel of jurors look for technical excellence, imagination, and creativity in individual submissions but then they consider how their choices would go into making an interesting exhibition.
I am sorry we can’t see this year’s exhibit in a physical space because it would be spectacular but the virtual exhibit and the details on each artist and their work is greater on the website. The website will be up for a year and during that time our Cultural Development Manager, Eldiana Begovic, will be posting additional content, videos of artist conversations and a juror’s look at this year’s exhibit.
